Data Destruction, Explained

The stage that protects your information. Its whole purpose is to make the data unrecoverable, and to prove it.

Data destruction is the process of permanently removing the data held on a device so it cannot be recovered. On modern storage that means certified wiping to a recognised standard such as NIST 800-88 for equipment that will be reused, or physical destruction, shredding a drive or destroying solid-state media, where it cannot be verifiably wiped. The defining feature of proper data destruction is the certificate: a record for each device confirming what was destroyed and how. That certificate is what lets a business demonstrate, if a regulator or a client ever asks, that a specific device was cleared. Data destruction is not concerned with the value of the hardware or where the materials end up; its single job is the information.

It is worth being clear that a factory reset or a deleted file is not data destruction. Both leave the underlying data recoverable with freely available tools, which is why regulated businesses rely on certified wiping or physical destruction rather than a reset. The method also has to match the media: a technique that reliably clears a traditional hard drive may do nothing on a solid-state drive, because flash memory stores data differently. IT asset disposal, or ITAD, is the managed, end-to-end process of retiring IT equipment. Treating recycling as data security

Handing data-bearing devices to a pure recycler and assuming the data is handled. It is not; recycling recovers materials. The data can survive right up to the shredder, and without a certificate you cannot show it was destroyed. This is the most common and most dangerous confusion.
