CPU Recycling and Computer Waste Recycling Explained
What actually happens to a processor, a motherboard and a tower once the data is gone.
CPU recycling is the recovery of the precious and base metals bound up in a processor and its packaging. Processors are removed during manual dismantling, kept as a separate high-value stream, and sent to specialist downstream processors rather than being shredded with the chassis.
A desktop computer is not one material. It is a stack of very different material streams that are only worth recovering if they are separated properly, and separating them properly is a manual job. This is where computer recycling done by a certified specialist differs from computer waste going into a general metals shredder: a shredder recovers steel and aluminium and destroys almost everything else of value. Manual dismantling keeps the high-value fractions intact.
What comes out of a computer tower
The proportions vary with age and specification, but the streams below are the ones separated on every job. The processor is the smallest fraction by weight and one of the most valuable by content, which is exactly why CPU recycling is handled as its own stream.

Why manual dismantling matters for CPU recycling
Shredding a whole tower is faster and cheaper for the recycler. It is also the point at which a processor stops being a processor and becomes a contaminant in a mixed metal fraction. Keeping CPUs, boards and copper separate is what allows the material to be recovered at a useful grade rather than downcycled, and it is why we dismantle before anything is size-reduced.
This matters commercially as well as environmentally. According to DCCEEW, roughly $430 million worth of materials was lost to Australian landfill in a single year of e-waste. Component-level separation is the practical answer to that number, and it is what the AS/NZS 5377 processing standard is built around.

A recycled computer is a data risk until the drive is verifiably sanitised or destroyed. Here is how that risk is removed, and what proof you hold afterwards.
Every storage device in every computer is either sanitised with verification or physically destroyed before the hardware is recycled or reused. The method is agreed with you before collection, the work runs under an ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified chain of custody, and you receive a serialised Certificate of Data Destruction listing each device and the method applied.
This is the part of computer recycling that carries legal weight. A desktop that leaves your office still holds whatever was on its drive, and under the Privacy Act 1988 the obligation to protect that information does not transfer to the recycler simply because the machine did. Serious or repeated breaches carry penalties of $50 million or more under the amended Act, calculated as the greater of that amount, three times the benefit obtained, or 30 per cent of adjusted turnover.
Choosing the right destruction method
There is no single correct method. The right one depends on the classification of the data, whether the drive is functional, and what your auditors need to see. We set this with you before collection rather than deciding it at the dock.

Sanitisation with verification
Erasure is only meaningful if it is checked. Every sanitised drive is verified and the result recorded against that drive's serial number, so the certificate reflects a confirmed outcome rather than an attempted one.
Documented chain of custody
Every computer is logged by serial number from the point of collection through to destruction and recycling, so nothing is unaccounted for. The manifest is signed at collection and reconciled against the certificates.
Physical destruction option
For high-classification data, drives are physically destroyed instead of sanitised before the computer is recycled. Witnessed destruction can be arranged where your policy requires it.

What the risk actually looks like in Australia
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner recorded 1,113 notifiable data breaches in 2024, made up of 518 in the January to June period and 595 in July to December. Of the July to December notifications, 25 were device-related: 15 from theft of paperwork or a data storage device, 9 from loss, and 1 from insecure disposal. Device-related breaches are the avoidable category, and they are avoided with documentation rather than good intentions.

Recycle, or Recover the Value First
Recycling a working computer for scrap throws away most of its value. Wherever a device still has useful life, secure reuse is the better outcome for your budget and for the environment.
Where a computer still works and still has market value, it is securely sanitised, verified, refurbished and resold rather than dismantled for materials. That value can be returned to you rather than spent on disposal, and reuse sits above recycling in the circular economy hierarchy for your sustainability reporting.
This is where ITC differs from a general computer recycler and from a free collection service. Through our sister refurbishment business, Computer and Laptop Sales, there is a genuine operating reuse pathway rather than a stated intention: a computer that still works is securely sanitised, verified, and then refurbished and resold. Only computers that are genuinely beyond economic reuse are recycled to component level.
The decision is always data-safe either way. Whether a computer is refurbished or recycled, the data is dealt with first under the same documented process, with a serialised certificate in both cases.

Why reuse beats recycling on the carbon numbers
Most of a computer's lifetime carbon is spent before it is ever switched on. Manufacturing dominates the footprint, so extending the life of an existing machine avoids far more emissions than recycling its materials ever recovers. Published life-cycle assessments put the embodied production footprint of a desktop computer in the region of 396 to 719 kg CO2e and a monitor at roughly 150 kg CO2e. Every machine that goes back into service instead of into a shredder keeps that embodied carbon in use.

How to Choose a Computer Recycling Company in Sydney
Ten questions worth asking any provider before you hand over a single machine, including us.
Ask for the certification numbers and the certifying body, ask what happens to the drives and what evidence you receive, ask whether the equipment leaves the state or the country, and ask to see a sample certificate. A provider that cannot answer those four in writing is not a provider you should give business data to.
Computer recycling is an unusual purchase because the risk sits entirely after the transaction. Once the machines are on the truck you have no visibility, and the cheapest quote is often the one with the least documentation behind it.

One thing worth knowing. A free collection service is not the same product as a certified disposal service, and neither is wrong. Free services are funded by the residual value of the equipment, which means the commercial incentive sits with volume rather than with documentation. If your machines never held business or client data, that is a fine trade. If they did, the certificate is the thing you are actually buying.

The Numbers
Why Business Computer Disposal Matters in Australia Right Now
Australia generated 588,000 tonnes of electronic waste in 2023, a 38 per cent increase over a decade, and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water estimates around $430 million worth of recoverable materials is lost to landfill in a single year. At the same time the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner recorded 1,113 data breach notifications in 2024. Computers sit at the intersection of both problems.
That is why a computer disposal decision is really two decisions taken together: what happens to the data, and what happens to the materials. A provider that only answers one of them has only done half the job.
What the regulations actually require in New South Wales
Businesses disposing of computers in New South Wales are working under three separate frameworks, and it is worth being precise about what each one does rather than repeating the shorthand you will see elsewhere.
Privacy Act 1988
Australian Privacy Principle 11.2 requires you to destroy or de-identify personal information you no longer need. A computer handed to a recycler with its drive intact has not satisfied that obligation. Serious or repeated interferences with privacy attract penalties of $50 million or more, calculated as the greater of $50 million, three times the benefit obtained, or 30 per cent of adjusted turnover.
Product Lifecycle Responsibility Act 2025 (NSW)
New South Wales has moved to a product stewardship framework that places responsibility for a product's end of life across the supply chain. For a business disposing of computers, the practical consequence is a rising expectation that you can show where your equipment went and what happened to it, rather than simply that it left the building.
POEO Act 1997 (NSW)
The Protection of the Environment Operations Act governs how waste is transported and where it may lawfully be taken in New South Wales. This is why the identity of the party who physically collects your computers matters, and why you should be able to name the facility your equipment was taken to.
A note on the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. The NTCRS is a Commonwealth product stewardship scheme that funds free drop-off points for householders and small business, covering televisions, computers, printers and computer peripherals. It is a valuable service and we point households toward it. It is not, however, a data security programme, and it is not designed for the volumes or the documentation requirements of a corporate refresh. Do you offer CPU recycling and computer waste recycling?
Yes. We handle component-level CPU recycling, recovering the precious metals and silicon in processors, and full computer waste recycling covering motherboards, RAM, graphics cards, power supplies, cabling and chassis. These components are separated during manual dismantling and streamed to specialist downstream processors, with material processing carried out in line with the AS/NZS 5377 standard. We also recycle computer screens, monitors and displays as part of every collection. If you have loose processors, boards or components without the machines they came from, we take those too.
Is my data safe when I recycle a computer?
Yes. Every storage drive in every computer is either securely erased with verification, degaussed, or physically destroyed by shredding before the computer is recycled or refurbished. The method is chosen with you based on the sensitivity of the data. The whole process runs under our ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified chain of custody, certificate AUP1338IT, and you receive a Certificate of Data Destruction recording each device by serial number and the method applied. A computer does not leave our process with recoverable data on it.
Can my old computers be reused instead of recycled?
Wherever possible, yes, and it is usually the better outcome. Through our sister refurbishment business, Computer and Laptop Sales, computers that still work are securely wiped, verified and refurbished for reuse rather than scrapped. This recovers value that can be returned to you through IT asset buyback, extends the life of the device, and ranks above recycling in the circular economy hierarchy for your sustainability reporting. Only computers beyond economic reuse are recycled to component level. Reuse never happens before data destruction, only after it.
Is computer collection free?
It depends on the volume, the device mix and the site. For business quantities of computers the collection is often included in the service, particularly where there is recoverable value in the equipment. For small quantities, difficult site access or specialist handling there may be a charge. Rather than publish a threshold that would not hold true for every job, we would rather you tell us the quantities, the device types and the location, and we will tell you exactly what it will cost before anything is booked.

How do I recycle old computers from a business upgrade?
Book a collection and we handle the rest. Every desktop and workstation is logged under chain of custody, drives are securely erased with verification or physically destroyed, working machines are assessed for buyback value, and the remainder is recycled to component level. You receive a Certificate of Data Destruction and a Certificate of Recycling for your compliance records. The most common mistake we see is booking the disposal after the new equipment has landed, which leaves old machines sitting in a storeroom carrying data risk for months.
How much does computer recycling cost in Sydney?
There is no single price, because the cost depends on volume, device mix, site access and the drive destruction method you choose. Recent working machines carry residual value that offsets the service, sometimes to the point where the job returns money to you. Older, faulty or heavily depreciated equipment carries little value and the processing cost sits with you. Do I need to remove the hard drives before you collect the computers?
No. Removing drives yourself creates a new problem: a box of loose, unlogged drives sitting in your office is harder to control than machines with the drives still in them. Leave them in place. We record every drive by serial number as part of the process and the certificate reconciles against your asset list. Can you destroy the data on site rather than at your facility?
Yes. On-site destruction is available where your policy requires that data-bearing media never leaves the premises intact, and your team can witness the process. It costs more than facility-based processing and it takes longer, so it is worth being clear about whether your policy actually requires it or whether a documented chain of custody satisfies the control. How long does a computer collection take to arrange?
Once scope is agreed, collection is scheduled around your operations rather than ours, including after-hours and weekend windows for tenancies with dock restrictions. Larger multi-site decommissioning programmes are planned in stages so your team is not dealing with the whole fleet at once. What happens to the materials after the computers are dismantled?
Computers are separated by hand into distinct streams: steel and aluminium chassis, copper wiring and heat sinks, circuit boards and processors carrying gold, silver, palladium and copper, power supplies, plastics, and batteries. Each stream goes to a specialist downstream processor for material recovery, with processing carried out in line with the AS/NZS 5377 standard. Manual dismantling matters here, because a general metals shredder recovers the steel and destroys most of the value in the boards.
Do you recycle computers for households, or only businesses?
Our service is built for business, government and institutional clients, and it is priced and documented accordingly. What certifications should a computer recycler hold?
At a minimum, look for ISO/IEC 27001 for information security, because that is the standard that governs how your data is handled, and ISO 14001 for environmental management. ISO 9001 tells you the process is documented consistently and ISO 45001 covers work health and safety, which matters when people are on your site. Can you handle a whole office decommissioning, not just the computers?
Yes. Office moves and site closures rarely involve computers alone. What is the environmental benefit of recycling a computer rather than replacing it?
Most of a computer's lifetime carbon is embodied in its manufacture, not its use. A desktop computer carries roughly 396 to 719 kilograms of CO2 equivalent in its manufacturing footprint and a monitor around 150 kilograms, so extending the life of a working machine through refurbishment avoids far more emissions than recycling the materials from a scrapped one. That is why our first question is always whether the equipment can be reused, and only then how it should be recycled.
How do you handle asset tags and company markings?
Tell us what you need. Asset tags, engraved markings and internal labels can be removed before any equipment is refurbished or resold, and we can record the tag numbers against the serial numbers on the certificate so your asset register can be closed out accurately.
