In Short

ITC Asset Management provides certified data wiping in Sydney using Blancco Drive Eraser to the NIST 800-88 Purge standard, with IEEE 2883-2022 methods for SSD and flash media. Unlike physical destruction, data wiping permanently erases data while keeping the device intact, so it can be redeployed internally or remarketed for value recovery through buyback. Every wipe produces a tamper-proof, serialised erasure certificate with per-device verification, supporting Privacy Act, APRA CPS 234, and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 compliance. We wipe laptops, desktops, servers, SSDs, hard drives, and mobile devices, on-site or at our North Rocks facility, under full chain of custody. Where a device fails verification or holds the highest-classification data, we escalate to physical destruction.

Certified Data Wiping in Sydney for Secure Reuse and Value Recovery

Data wiping is the secure erasure of all data from a storage device so that it cannot be recovered, while leaving the device fully functional for reuse, redeployment, or resale.

This is the key difference between data wiping and physical destruction. Shredding a drive renders it scrap metal. Wiping it to a recognised standard removes the data just as permanently while preserving the asset value, so the device can be redeployed to another user, remarketed through buyback, or returned to a leasing financier in working condition.

For most modern IT equipment in good condition, wiping is the smarter financial and environmental choice. It recovers value, extends the working life of the hardware, and keeps usable equipment out of the recycling stream. The only requirement is that the erasure is done to a verifiable standard with audit-ready documentation, because a factory reset or a consumer wiping tool does not satisfy the Privacy Act or APRA expectations for corporate data.

Our Sydney data wiping service uses Blancco Drive Eraser, the most widely certified data erasure software, to deliver NIST 800-88 compliant erasure with a tamper-proof certificate for every device. We operate under our ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified Information Security Management System with full chain of custody.

Data Wiping vs Physical Destruction

Both render data unrecoverable when done correctly. The difference is what happens to the asset and its value afterwards.

Factor Data Wiping Physical Destruction
Data Outcome Permanently erased, NIST 800-88 Purge verified Permanently destroyed, NIST 800-88 Destroy
Device Condition Fully functional, ready for reuse Rendered scrap, not reusable
Value Recovery Asset retains resale value for buyback Material recovery value only
Environmental Impact Extends device life, supports circular economy Device enters recycling stream immediately
Best For Working modern equipment for redeployment or resale Faulty drives, highest-classification data, failed verification
Documentation Serialised erasure certificate, per-device verification Serialised Certificate of Destruction

Choose data wiping when

  • The equipment is modern and in good working condition
  • You want to recover value through internal redeployment or buyback
  • You are returning leased equipment to a financier in working condition
  • Your sustainability reporting favours device reuse over recycling

Choose physical destruction when

  • The drive is faulty and cannot complete a verified erasure
  • The data is the highest classification and policy mandates destruction
  • The device has no meaningful resale or redeployment value
  • You prefer shredding or SSD destruction for assurance

Why We Use Blancco for Data Wiping

Blancco Drive Eraser is the most widely certified data erasure software in the world, and the reason we can stand behind every erasure certificate we issue.

Blancco holds independent certifications and approvals from a range of international bodies and supports over 20 recognised erasure standards, including NIST 800-88. This matters because a data wipe is only as defensible as the verification behind it. A consumer wiping tool or a factory reset leaves data recoverable and produces no audit evidence.

Every Blancco erasure produces a tamper-proof certificate recording the device serial number, the erasure standard applied, the method, the date, and the verification result. This is the documentation that satisfies the Privacy Act reasonable steps obligation, APRA CPS 234 information security control attestation, and ISO/IEC 27001 evidence requirements.

For devices that fail verification, where the drive firmware does not support a verified erasure, or where the data classification mandates it, we escalate to physical destruction so that no device leaves with recoverable data.

Data Wiping Sydney: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between data wiping and data destruction?

Both make data unrecoverable when done to a recognised standard. Data wiping erases the data while leaving the device fully functional, so it can be reused, redeployed, or remarketed for value recovery. Physical destruction (shredding) renders the device scrap. Wiping follows NIST 800-88 Purge; destruction follows NIST 800-88 Destroy. For working modern equipment, wiping is usually the better financial and environmental choice. For faulty drives or the highest-classification data, destruction is preferred.

Is a factory reset or consumer wiping tool good enough?

No. A factory reset typically does not remove data in a way that prevents forensic recovery, and consumer wiping tools produce no verifiable audit evidence. For corporate data subject to the Privacy Act or APRA CPS 234, you need a certified erasure to a recognised standard with a tamper-proof certificate and per-device verification. That is what Blancco Drive Eraser provides and a factory reset does not.

Can you wipe SSDs securely?

Yes. SSDs require different handling from magnetic hard drives because of wear levelling and over-provisioning. We use IEEE 2883-2022 aligned methods including firmware-based sanitise commands and cryptographic erase where the drive supports it, with Blancco verifying the sanitise completed. Where an SSD does not support a verifiable sanitise or fails verification, we escalate to physical SSD destruction.

What standard do you wipe to?

We wipe to the NIST 800-88 Purge standard using Blancco Drive Eraser, which supports over 20 recognised international erasure standards. The specific method is matched to the media: verified overwrite for magnetic HDDs, and firmware sanitise or cryptographic erase for SSDs aligned to IEEE 2883-2022. The standard applied is recorded on each device's erasure certificate.

What documentation do I receive?

Every wiped device receives a tamper-proof, serialised Blancco erasure certificate recording the device serial number, the erasure standard and method applied, the date, and the verification result. A consolidated disposition report reconciles every device to its certificate. This documentation supports the Privacy Act reasonable steps obligation, APRA CPS 234 attestation, and ISO/IEC 27001 evidence requirements.

Can you wipe on-site at our premises?

Yes. We can perform data wiping on-site at your Sydney premises so equipment does not leave your control until it has been erased, or we can collect under chain of custody and wipe at our North Rocks facility. On-site wiping is common where internal policy requires data erasure before equipment leaves the building. For witnessed physical destruction on-site, see our on-site data destruction service.

How does wiping help with value recovery?

Because a wiped device is fully functional, it retains its resale and redeployment value. After erasure, equipment in good condition can be redeployed to another user internally, returned to a leasing financier in working condition, or remarketed through buyback to return revenue to your budget. This is the core advantage of wiping over destruction, which leaves only material recovery value.

What happens if a drive cannot be wiped?

Any device that fails erasure verification, or whose firmware does not support a verifiable erasure, is escalated to physical destruction so that no device leaves with recoverable data. This is recorded in the disposition report, so every device is accounted for as either verifiably wiped or destroyed. This fail-safe is a core part of our process.

Do you wipe servers and storage arrays?

Yes. We perform bulk drive erasure for servers and storage arrays with consolidated reporting, which is common during hardware refresh and data centre decommissioning where the equipment retains value. This is frequent scope for healthcare and government clients managing large estates. For high-classification production storage, witnessed physical destruction is often preferred instead.

Which areas of Sydney do you service?

We provide data wiping across the Sydney metropolitan area from our North Rocks facility, including the Sydney CBD and Greater Sydney. On-site wiping and collection are available throughout the Sydney metropolitan area.
