Server Decommissioning and Server Recycling Sydney Requirements
Server recycling demands specialized expertise due to the high concentration of sensitive data, multiple storage media types, and valuable materials contained within enterprise server hardware. A single rack server may contain multiple HDDs or SSDs in RAID configurations, NVRAM modules, management controller storage, and firmware-embedded data that all require appropriate sanitization before the equipment can be responsibly recycled or remarketed.
- RAID array processing ensures all drives in mirrored, striped, and parity configurations are individually identified, tracked by serial number, and destroyed to prevent data reconstruction from any single drive
- Multiple storage locations within servers are addressed including primary storage drives, NVRAM modules, TPM chips, BMC/iLO/iDRAC management controllers, and boot media containing configuration data
- Enterprise server brands including Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Lenovo ThinkSystem, Cisco UCS, and Supermicro platforms are handled with brand-specific knowledge of storage locations and destruction requirements
- Blade server and chassis systems receive specialized processing that accounts for shared storage, backplane configurations, and management module data across the entire blade chassis
- Valuable material recovery from server hardware extracts precious metals, copper, aluminium, and rare earth elements through certified recycling processes that maximize environmental benefit
- Asset recovery assessment identifies servers with residual market value for refurbishment and resale, offsetting recycling costs and extending equipment lifecycles through secondary markets
ITC processes enterprise servers from data centres and server rooms across Sydney and NSW, handling everything from individual tower servers to full rack decommissioning projects. Our technical staff understand enterprise server architectures and ensure comprehensive data destruction across all storage locations within each platform.
Understanding RAID Array Data Destruction
Feature
RAID Configuration
ITC Destruction Requirement
RAID 0 (Striping)
Data is split across all drives
All drives must be destroyed simultaneously
RAID 1 (Mirroring)
Data is duplicated on all drives
All drives must be destroyed
RAID 5/6 (Parity)
Data and parity are striped across drives
All drives must be destroyed to prevent reconstruction
RAID 10 (Stripe of Mirrors)
Combines RAID 1 and RAID 0
All drives must be destroyed
The Hidden Data Risk in Server Storage
Modern servers store data in more places than just the primary hard drives. A comprehensive server data destruction plan must account for all data-bearing components to be effective.
Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)
- Operating systems
- Applications
- User data
- High Risk
Solid-State Drives (SSDs)
- High-performance data
- Caching
- Boot volumes
- High Risk
NVRAM/Cache
- Cached data
- System configuration
- Medium Risk
BMC/iLO/DRAC
- Management credentials
- System logs
- Network config
- Medium Risk
TPM (Trusted Platform Module)
- Encryption keys
- Platform integrity data
- Critical Risk
RAID Controller Cache
- Write-back cache data
- Array metadata
- High Risk
Complete Sanitisation Required
Our NIST 800-88 Compliant Process
We follow the globally recognised NIST Special Publication 800-88 guidelines for all server data destruction activities, using Blancco Drive Eraser for certified sanitisation.
1 - Request a Quote
Contact ITC with details of your server inventory including make, model, and quantity for a free quote.
2 - Secure Collection
We arrange secure collection from your Sydney premises with full chain of custody documentation.
3 - Asset Inventory
Every server and storage device is inventoried by serial number before processing.
4 - Data Destruction
All data-bearing components are sanitised using Blancco Drive Eraser to NIST 800-88 standards, or physically destroyed.
5 - Certification & Recycling
You receive a tamper-proof certificate of destruction. Hardware is then recycled with 95%+ material recovery.
Compliance You Can Trust
Our server recycling services meet both international NIST 800-88 standards and Australian ISM requirements for government and enterprise clients, including Clear (logical overwriting with Blancco), Purge (ATA Secure Erase for HDDs, Cryptographic Erase for SSDs), and Destroy (physical shredding or disintegration) methods.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I securely dispose of old servers in Sydney?
The most secure method is to use a certified ITAD provider like ITC. Our process involves NIST 800-88 compliant data destruction using Blancco software, followed by environmentally responsible recycling of the physical hardware. We provide full certification for your records.
What happens to data on RAID arrays when servers are recycled?
Data on RAID arrays is striped across multiple drives. To ensure complete destruction, all drives in the array, including hot spares, must be sanitised or destroyed simultaneously. ITC’s RAID-aware process guarantees no data can be reconstructed.
Is degaussing effective for server hard drives?
Degaussing can be effective for older magnetic HDDs if the degausser has sufficient magnetic field strength (coercivity). However, it is completely ineffective for SSDs and may not work on modern high-coercivity HDDs. Certified software wiping or physical shredding is the recommended approach.
How do you destroy data on enterprise SSDs in servers?
We use the Blancco Drive Eraser software, which triggers the SSD’s internal Cryptographic Erase or Block Erase functions. This is a NIST 800-88 Purge level sanitisation. For higher security needs, we physically shred the SSDs into 2mm particles.
What certifications should server recycling companies have?
Look for ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), R2 (Responsible Recycling), and NAID AAA for physical destruction. Your provider should also use certified software like Blancco.
Can server hard drives be wiped and reused?
Yes. Using a certified data erasure tool like Blancco, we can securely wipe server hard drives to NIST 800-88 standards. The drives can then be safely reused, resold, or redeployed, extending their life and providing a return on investment.
Do I need to remove hard drives before recycling servers?
No. For maximum security and a complete chain of custody, it is best to leave the drives in the servers. Our team will inventory every drive by serial number before performing on-site or off-site data destruction.
How much does server recycling cost in Sydney?
The cost depends on the number of servers, the data destruction method required, and any potential asset recovery value. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote for your server disposal project in Sydney.
