What is e-waste recycling?

E-waste recycling is the process of recovering valuable materials from end-of-life electronics so they can be reused, while safely managing the hazardous substances those devices contain. At its simplest, devices are broken down, sorted into their component materials, and those materials are processed back into raw inputs for new products.

For a household, that is the whole story. For a business, one step comes first and changes everything: the data. A retired computer or server holds information that has to be destroyed before the device is broken down for materials. That is why a business-grade recycling process starts with secure collection and certified data destruction, not with the shredder.

Each stage explained

1. Secure collection

The process starts at your site. A vetted team collects the equipment, which matters for a business because data-bearing devices should never sit in an unsecured load or a public drop-off. For larger jobs, equipment is packed and removed in one controlled visit.

2. Logged under chain of custody

Before anything is processed, each asset is recorded, typically by serial number, and tracked from collection through to final processing. This chain of custody is the documentation trail that lets you prove later exactly what happened to every device.

3. Data destruction

This is the step consumer recycling skips. Any device that held data is wiped to the NIST 800-88 standard using software such as Blancco, or physically destroyed if it cannot be wiped or if destruction is required. Only once the data is gone does the device move on to material recovery.

4. Sorting and dismantling

Equipment is triaged. Working units that can be safely refurbished may be remarketed, which recovers value and is the most environmentally sound outcome. The rest is dismantled into major components: boards, drives, metals, plastics and glass.

5. Shredding and separation

Dismantled material is shredded and mechanically separated into streams, glass, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, circuit boards and batteries. This first stage of recycling turns whole devices into sorted raw material.

6. Material recovery

The separated streams are sent to specialist processors that turn them back into usable raw materials. Some of this happens in Australia, and some materials, such as certain circuit board fractions, are sent to approved overseas facilities that have the infrastructure to recover them responsibly.

7. Certified reporting

Finally, you receive documentation: certificates of data destruction recorded against the assets, and confirmation that recycling was carried out in line with the AS/NZS 5377 standard. For a business, this paperwork is what satisfies the Privacy Act and your auditors.
